It's R-rated, about 17 minutes longer, and does a pretty good job of making the plot more coherent and realizing the themes of the movie. Also, the action is a lot better, in my opinion.

If you do happen to end up liking the extended version more that's fine, but I think extended versions should be 'here's a bit more for the fans' not a second chance to gain back some positive reviews.
