WebMay 29, 2005 · The big problem here is that a lawnmower engine has a vertical shaft, a boat propshaft is usually horizontal. To use the mower engine to turn a prop, there needs to be a 90-degree gearbox somewhere. Running a mower engine turned on its side will do some pretty hefty damage to its innards. WebApr 17, 2007 · I am going to start a project to convert a push mower into a little outboard motor for my boat at school. I currently have got two quality Briggs and Straton engines to use. Ones a 4 horse and the other is a 3 1/2 horse. I'll use which ever one I get running, though I'd rather use the much smaller 3 1/2 horse. Both are vertical shaft.

Sear sold some under the names of Eska, Ted Williams, and even the Sear brand. And they were air cooled as well. I actually own an old Ted Williams, if I remember the name correctly now, and it was a 7.5 HP air cooled engine. It really looked like a typical lawn mower engine under the cowling.
